Our Innately Creative Spirit

January 5, 2015

Seeing Our Own Creativity

"...Humans are naturally blessed with creative spirit. There is an unfortunate tendency, however, for that spirit to be stifled in some people and nurtured in others. At some point, often childhood, a person is told that perhaps he/she is "just not artistic" or "not a creative person." In all cases, this claim is false." - The Architecture of Light

It is funny how inspiration and insight can come from the most unlikely of places. I wouldn't have thought I would have received such wise words about creativity and humanity from my lighting design course textbook, but the truth of what Sage Russel says in The Architecture of Light, is deep and important for each of us to understand and remember.

We were all blessed with creativity ingrained into our very beginning... and whether or not you believe it, you have the capacity to create great, beautiful, and amazing things. Whether your creativity lies in painting a portrait, taking a photograph, making a delicious meal, building impeccable spreadsheets, or planning the best weekend getaways for you and a loved one, it's time to open yourself up to seeing your own creative spirit.

CHALLENGE TIME!!!! My challenge to all of my readers this week is to look inside of yourself and find your own creative spirit. By Sunday of this week, do something that truly expresses who you are in a creative way. Then if you'd like, come back and tell me about it! I'd love to hear from you all!

Just Remember: “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” –Scott Adams

Need some inspiration:

  • Draw or Sketch something that inspires you

  • Bake a Pie or something equally delicious, and share it with your loved ones

  • Put together an amazing outfit that shows who you are to the world

  • Go on a hike with your camera and take photographs of interesting things you see

  • Play an instrument

  • Have your own personal dance party in your bed or living room

Go nuts! Be bold, enjoy yourself and get inspired by your own innate capacity for creativity!
